Poisoned Over 2,800 Stray Dogs and Buried Them as Compost" – Outrage Explodes!

Can you imagine a politician standing up in the state assembly and proudly admitting to mass-killing thousands of dogs? That's exactly what happened in Karnataka back in August 2025, and people are still fuming about it months later.

SL Bhojegowda is a Janata Dal Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), dropped this shock during a heated debate on the growing stray dog menace. He casually revealed that during his time as president of the Chikkamagaluru municipal council, he ordered the poisoning of around 2,500 to 2,800 stray dogs (numbers vary slightly in reports).
He confessed his method which is mixing poison into meat then feeding it to the dogs, and then burying their bodies under coconut trees and in coffee estates to act as natural compost. He justified it all by saying it was for the safety of children especially poor kids who are most at risk from dog attacks. Bhojegowda even said he'd willingly go to jail if needed because protecting kids comes first.
But he didn't stop there. He called animal lovers a bigger "menace" than the dogs and suggested releasing 10 stray dogs into their homes so they could "understand the reality."

This confession came right amid India's raging debate on stray dogs. Karnataka alone saw over 2.86 lakh dog bite cases and 26 rabies deaths from January to August 2025. The Supreme Court had just ordered massive catch-sterilize-relocate efforts in Delhi-NCR, banning outright killing.
Animal rights groups like PETA India and CUPA Bengaluru slammed it as cruel and illegal. Social media went wild, with videos of his speech going viral. Protests erupted, and calls for justice poured in from dog lovers across the country.
There's no public record of any arrests, charges, or major investigation against Bhojegowda. The story faded from headlines, but online anger hasn't. This incident highlights the tough balance between human safety and animal rights in India. Experts push for sterilization, vaccination, and better waste management as humane solutions.
