PM Surya Ghar Scheme: Get Free Electricity with Solar Panels

The Government of India has launched a big plan called the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (Prime Minister's Sun Home Free Electricity Scheme). The main goal of this plan is simple: to help one crore (10 million) Indian homes put solar panels on their roofs and get up to 300 units of free electricity every month. This is a huge step towards making our homes greener and saving money on electric bills.
Big Support to Go Solar
Putting solar panels on your house can be expensive, so the government is offering a large subsidy, or financial help, to make it affordable for everyone.
For systems up to 2 kilowatts (kW), the government gives a subsidy of ₹60,000. For bigger systems, up to 3 kW, the maximum help you can get is ₹78,000. This money is sent directly to your bank account after the solar system is installed and working. This central financial support is key to helping families pay for the installation.
How It Works and Saves You Money
This scheme uses a system called Net Metering. When the sun shines and your solar panels make more electricity than you can use, that extra power is sent back to the local electricity grid. Your electricity meter will run backwards, and you get credit for that extra power.
- You get free electricity up to 300 units every month.
- If you make more electricity than you use, you earn money from the distribution company (DISCOM).
The government has also made it easy to get special bank loans at a low interest rate (around 7%) if you need extra money to complete the project, especially for systems up to 3 kW. This makes the whole process very easy on your pocket.
Easy and Safe Process
To make sure the solar panels are high quality and safe, the government has set strict standards for the equipment used. Also, the company that installs your solar system must give you a guarantee for maintenance and service for five years.
The application process is entirely online. You just need to go to the official website, register with your electricity consumer number, and apply. Once approved, you choose a government-approved installer, get the work done, and the subsidy is credited to you. This simple and secure process ensures that the benefits of clean energy reach everyone quickly and fairly. This scheme is not just about saving money; it is about building a future where every home in India is powered by the sun.
